Biosecurity measures to prevent spreading Gyrodactylus salaris – applicable to all anglers fishing our beats
In addition to individual beat rules
DBAA Anglers must take strict biosecurity measures to prevent spreading Gyrodactylus salaris (a lethal parasite that devastates Atlantic salmon). Because the parasite survives for up to 7 days in damp conditions, anglers must disinfect or completely dry all waders, nets, and tackle when moving between different river catchments.
Mandatory Protective Measures for Anglers
- Dry Equipment: Dry all fishing gear, boats, and clothing thoroughly in sunlight for at least 48 hours at temperatures above 20°C. Alternatively, freeze damp equipment for at least 24 hours. [1, 2]
- Disinfect Gear: Sterilize gear by soaking for a minimum of 10 minutes in approved solutions like 1% Virkon S, a 3% salt solution, or heated water (at 60°C for 1 hour). [1, 2]
- Declare History: If you have fished outside of the UK (particularly in Scandinavia or mainland Europe), many local fisheries require you to sign a GS Declaration form verifying your gear has been sterilized. [1, 2]
- Never Transfer Fish: Never use live or dead bait fish from other river systems, and avoid discharging fish waste into natural waters when catching fish away from your local area. [1]
